WHY CREATE A LEAD MAGNET?

A lead magnet is a powerful tool for building an email list. It allows you to offer value to your potential customers and build trust with them. By providing them with something of value, you establish yourself as an expert in your niche and increase the likelihood that they will become paying customers.

The main reason why businesses use lead magnets is that they're easy to create and distribute, and they work! Creating a lead magnet can help you build an audience faster and more cheaply than other methods. Traditional advertising can be expensive, and it doesn’t always deliver results. A lead magnet, on the other hand, is a low-cost, high-impact way to attract new leads and grow your business.

SET A GOAL FOR YOUR LEAD MAGNET

Before you start creating your lead magnet, it’s important to set a goal. What do you want to achieve with it? Having a clear goal in mind will help you create the right content. Examples of lead magnet goals are:

  • Build your audience on social media by providing extra value (e.g. Twitter auto-DMs)
  • Increase sales of a specific product or service
  • Build your brand by establishing yourself as an expert in your niche Generate leads for your business
  • Increase your email list subscribers

CHOOSE A TOPIC FOR YOUR LEAD MAGNET

Your lead magnet should be aligned with your business and target audience. Think about the pain points and challenges your potential customers are facing and create content that addresses those concerns.

DEFINE THE FORM OF YOUR LEAD MAGNET

Typical lead magnets are:

  • checklists
  • cheat sheets
  • small reports, < 10 pages

However, feel free to be creative. You can perfectly create:

  • mind maps
  • infographics
  • Notion templates
  • case studies
  • webinars
  • video tutorials
  • audio story

or anything that fits your audience needs and your style.

CREATE AN OUTLINE FOR YOUR LEAD MAGNET

Once you have a topic and a form in mind, create an outline for your lead magnet. This will ensure that your content is well-organized and easy to follow. It will also help you stay on track and ensure that you cover all the important points. You can do this by writing down all the topics that you want to talk about in your lead magnet, along with their subtopics. Then, organize them into sections based on their relevance and importance. Discard everything that does not add value.

For instance, the lead magnet you’re reading right now (yes, this document) is organized in small sections sorted by chronological order to ensure that a solopreneur willing to learn how to create a lead magnet can simply follow all the sections step-by-step and achieves the great result of having built and offered a lead magnet.

BUILD OUT YOUR LEAD MAGNET CONTENT

Going to the heart of your work, it’s time to create the content for your lead magnet. Make sure that it’s high-quality and offers real value to your potential customers. You don't want to waste their time or make them feel like they're being sold something they don't need or want. You can use a mix of text, images, and other media to keep your lead magnet engaging and interesting.

STORE YOUR LEAD MAGNET ON YOUR WEBSITE OR ON A PLATFORM

Once your lead magnet is complete, you can either host it on your website or use a platform. If you have a CMS website, a la Squarespace, you can create an e-commerce product and offer it for free. That’s the best solution as it will drive traffic to your website. Otherwise, you can leverage an existing platform such as Gumroad. Make sure that it’s easy to access and download for your potential customers.

CREATE A LEAD MAGNET SALES PAGE AND OPTIMIZE IT FOR SEO

To promote your lead magnet, you’ll need to create a sales page. This page should be optimized for search engines (SEO) and include a clear call-to- action (CTA). A CTA tells people what they should do next in order to get more information about your product or service. It could be something as simple as "Click here" or "Sign up now”. Make sure the sales page is easy to read and visually appealing thanks to proper copywriting so that visitors will want to stay on the page longer than just a few seconds.

If you are unsure about your sales content, compare it to solopreneurs in your niche. Eventually, learn more about copywriting. Ultimately, ask a professional copywriter (hello you, we are here 😇).

ADD YOUR FORM TO A WEB PAGE

To start collecting email addresses, you’ll need to add a form to your website. This can be done on a web page, a product page, a blog post, and/or a landing page. Make sure that the form is prominently displayed and easy to fill out. You may even only ask for an email address. The lesser number of fields to fill in by users, the lesser friction your leads will have in their path to sending you their email addresses.

If you have a custom website, ask your developer. If you have a CMS website, you can either use their internal form and email marketing features (they most probably have those), or integrate with a third-party system either directly or with a connector such as Zapier or IFTTT. You can also create a landing page.

SET UP A FUNNEL FOR YOUR LEAD MAGNET

Once you have your lead magnet and form in place, it’s time to set up an email marketing funnel. This will allow you to convert leads into buyers using automation and drip marketing campaigns. Make sure that your funnel is optimized for conversions and that you’re tracking your results.

At ExogN we use MailerLite (affiliate link) as the email automation tool and the newsletter tool to send emails to leads. Other famous email marketing tools for lead magnets are ConvertKit, MailChimp, and Aweber. The list is not exhaustive, there are hundreds of services to send emails.

GET SIGN-UPS BY SHARING YOUR NEW LEAD MAGNET

To get sign-ups, you’ll need to promote your lead magnet. This can be done through your existing social media audience, newsletter, blog, or paid ads (e.g. Google Ads). Make sure that your targeting is on point and that you’re reaching the right audience.

TEST AND MEASURE THE SUCCESS OF YOUR LEAD MAGNET

Finally, it’s important to test and measure the success of your lead magnet. Use analytics to track your results and make adjustments as needed. This will help you optimize your strategy and improve your results over time. You will get data from your CMS or your email marketing tool.

By following these steps, you can create a lead magnet that will help you build your email list, establish yourself as an expert in your niche, and convert leads into paying customers. Remember to keep your target audience in mind, provide real value, and track your results to ensure that your lead magnet and email marketing funnel are effective.
